Держу в руках внешний накопитель WD My Passport. Первое, что приятно поражает, - действительно маленькие габариты и вес. Стильное, суперсовременное устройство непременно послужит предметом легкой зависти, когда вы достанете по случаю его из кармана пиджака. Именно из кармана, устройство можно смело считать по-настоящему карманным.
Емкость - 500 Гбайт. При таких размерах и весе это кажется невероятным. Сегодня набор туриста, желающего запечатлеть все лучшие моменты своей поездки для истории, включает в себя камеру или фотоаппарат, ноутбук или планшет и внешний винчестер. Вес устройств и размеры критичны. Если принять, что в среднем 1 час видео в оцифрованном виде умещается в 10 Гбайт, можно смело рассчитывать привезти домой, как минимум, 45 часов съемки.
Габариты:
- высота - 15 мм;
- длина - 111 мм;
- ширина - 82 мм;
Вес всего 138 грамм - как у небольшого смартфона!
Температурные требования:
- в рабочем состоянии - от 5° C до 35° C;
- в неподключенном состоянии - от -20° C до 65° C.
Внешний вид и упаковка:
Комплект поставки не очень богатый: накопитель, кабель - около 40 см длины и памятка для пользователя.
Интерфейс - USB 3.0 (с USB 2.0 полная совместимость). Скорость передачи по последовательной шине (USB 3.0) - максимум 5 Гбит/с. Для теста я взял фильм размером чуть меньше 10 Гбайт, скопировал на устройство и с устройства. Тестирование производилось на скоростном ноутбуке ASUS G75WV, под управлением 64-битной версии Windows 8, с подключением к порту USB 3.0. И вот каковы были результаты:

Результаты очень впечатляющи. Аналогичные винчестеры с USB 2.0 вдвое медленнее. Хотя там ограничивает все старая шина.
Винчестер уже был отформатирован под NTFS. Пользователям Mac придется готовить его к подключению самим, или обеспечить поддержку NTFS в OS X. Все программное обеспечение лежит непосредственно на диске, что удобно, но не очень хорошо, потому что есть риск его повреждения или потери.
Компакт-диска в комплекте нет, поэтому следует позаботиться о резерве этого софта. Почему? Мы привыкли, что внешние винчестеры, как правило, распознаются Windows сами собой, критичных установок не требуется. Но здесь нас ждет сюрприз. Устройство действительно может быть подсоединено и работоспособно просто так, но для управления им более глубоко требуется устанавливать драйвер дополнительного контроллера. После подсоединения (без установки чего либо) в диспетчере устройств появляются не два, а три устройства:
Устройство WD SES Device распознается, но драйвер Windows автоматически не устанавливает. Установить можно прямо из диспетчера, указав источником само устройство. Предполагаю, что это устройство служит для управления, используется фирменными программами. WD My Passport 074A USB Device - собственно диск (флэшка). Третье устройство - том запоминающего устройства.
Само устройство явно ориентировано на и . Простая установка драйверов привела также к установке фирменного приложения WD (возможно через Windows Store) автоматически:
Приложение разработано компанией Western Digital, используется для внешних винчестеров не только этой модели. Само приложение, хоть и на английском, вполне функционально, но только для воспроизведения. Управление файлами отсутствует.

Вообще приятно, что производители стали учитывать плиточный интерфейс от Microsoft в своем фирменном софте. Хотя он пока еще и далек от идеала.
На данном этапе вся информация и поддержка данного устройства на сайте компании Western Digital (www.wdc.com) обеспечена очень неплохо. Все об устройстве, все программное обеспечение в наличии, для Windows и для Mac. Удивило, что на винчестере программное обеспечение имеет более поздние версии, чем на сайте, что, впрочем, не очень критично. Однако необходимость установки драйвера все ж тревожит. Сегодня , кто знает будет ли поддерживаться драйвер в Windows 28?
О надежности всех этих устройств сегодня трудно что-либо сказать. Я выделил его под домашнюю видеотеку. В сети предоставляемые пользователю объемы сервисами типа Google Drive или SkyDrive просто смехотворны. Не знаю, сохранятся ли мои драгоценные видеосъемки на протяжении хотя бы десятка лет, при условии неинтенсивного использования внешнего винчестера, или нет. Время покажет.
