The scanner allows you to solve a number of problems with digitizing information, quickly and conveniently turning physical media into an electronic document. After purchasing this device, a dilemma arises on how to connect the scanner to the computer so that it works without failures. In this article we will also look at the option of creating a home network, which will allow you to use one scanner for several devices.

Connection procedure

You can configure device operating parameters in the “Equipment” menu.

If you know how to connect a keyboard or how to connect a wireless mouse, then you have already visited this section in the “Control Panel” and are familiar with its capabilities.

Installing a Network Scanner

If there are several computers in the room, and there is only one scanner, then you will have to create a network to work with it. In this case, the scanning equipment will be connected directly to the network switch.

The first step is to install drivers and assign an IP address.

To complete this step, the scanner must first be connected to one computer. After carrying out the above procedures, the equipment can be turned off.

After the preparatory work, connect the device to the network switch. Then configure each computer on the network by creating a connection. For this:

You can connect a printer or other office equipment in a similar way. Don't forget to install drivers on all devices in your workgroup. Otherwise, the equipment may not work correctly or even refuse to perform its functions.

Let's set it up in 10 minutes!

In order for the device to function correctly and correctly, it must first be configured. Most often, installation and configuration of the scanner occurs automatically - you just need to install the necessary drivers. But there are also various subtleties, for example, setting up a network scanner, where the intervention of a specialist is necessary.

Computer assistance Compolife provides an on-site service for connecting and setting up scanners of any model: Kyocera, HP, Canon, Epson, Samsung, etc. The experience of our employees guarantees fast and or peripheral equipment: from local to setting up a scanner over a network.

What is needed to properly connect and install the scanner?

To connect the scanner to a computer or laptop, as a rule, a USB cable is used, which is supplied with the device. Also included is usually a disk with drivers and scanning software.

After the installation of the scanner is completed, you should configure it. The specific setup of the device depends on the user’s needs: black and white or color image, resolution 300 dpi or higher quality 600-1200 dpi, etc.

Most standard software has limited functionality. Therefore, if you need, for example, to recognize text on a scanned document, then you cannot do without it. The ABBYY FineReader program is suitable for such purposes. Its installation can also be ordered from our service.

  • Follow the prompts of the Installer Wizard and click “Next”. We agree to the license, and in the options window, check the “Install Server Software” box.

  • The program instance will be installed in server mode, which will enable other PCs to use the network scanner.
  • At the next stage, you need to make sure that the checkbox is checked, as in the screenshot.

IMPORTANT! The firewall may prompt you for permissions for the program. In this case, it is recommended to allow the program on all networks.

Launching the server version

You just need to select your scanning device so RemoteScan can share it. Double click on the required device.

The program will be minimized to tray and will then launch itself when you turn on the computer.

If you need to reconfigure the scanning device, you can always do this by right-clicking on the RemoteScan program icon and selecting “Choose a Scanner”.

As you can see, using the program is quite simple.

Installing the client version

Installing the client part is similar to the server part, with the only difference that now you should check the “Install Client Software” checkbox.

You also need to allow it to work on all networks if the firewall asks.

IMPORTANT! Firewalls of some antivirus programs block ports 6077 and 6078, which are necessary for the program to operate. It is necessary to add to the exceptions the exe file of the program itself (on the server) and the above-mentioned ports (both on the server and on the client).

Network scanning

Use a scanning program you are familiar with or, for example, install WinScan2PDF. It is very small and does not require installation. Designed for scanning images to PDF files only.

The scanner has become a real panacea for office workers, students and those who like to transfer information from paper to digital form. Using it, you can copy images, texts and transfer them to your computer, saving a lot of time. But what to do if you just bought a scanner? How to produce connecting a scanner? What programs can be used to work with it? Let's figure it out.

So, let's start with the simplest thing - we take out the scanner and everything that comes with it (as a rule, this is a power cord and AC adapter, a USB cable, a CD with drivers, software, as well as a user manual in an electronic form). Now we “assemble” the scanner (some scanners are immediately ready for use, in some models you need to install a cover or input/output tray). Each device is “assembled” in its own way, which is why carefully read the instruction book that comes with the kit.

“Assembly” using the example of the Epson Perfection 1670 Photo scanner

Before connecting the scanner to your computer, you must install the driver, which is located on the CD. Insert the CD/DVD into the drive, follow the prompts that appear on the screen (be careful when specifying the device, as one disc may contain several drivers for scanners of the same series). After installation is complete, you will be asked to register the product on the official website (this way, you will have access to the latest updates, as well as useful programs and utilities).

After installing the drivers, go to connecting the scanner. To do this, take the power cord and AC adapter and connect them to each other. We connect one edge to the scanner, the second to the power supply.

IMPORTANT! When turning off the scanner from the network, wait at least 10 seconds, and only then turn it on again. If you turn on the scanner immediately, you may damage it.

Now connect the USB cable. We connect one edge to the USB connector of the scanner (square connector), the second - to a free USB connector on the computer. No further action is required.

Now for the first scan. Raise the scanner lid, place a photo or document that requires scanning, and check that it lies flat. Lower the lid and press Start. A panel will appear on your computer showing the action you need to take. Select the path to save the files, the format, then click Save. After scanning is completed, you will be able to view the processed file in the folder you specified for saving.

Let's move on to scanning programs. One of the most famous is ABBYYFineReader. With its help you can scan and recognize texts and photographs, save scanned information in a format convenient for you (supports about 20 formats), work with images and much more. Another convenient utility can be called VueScan 8.6.27 (one of the latest versions). In addition to standard scanning, it can improve the resulting image. This utility supports more than two hundred scanner models, works with the RAW file format, and also has many other advantages.

A scanner is a device that helps convert a variety of documents, including texts, spreadsheets and photographs into electronic form. Scanner models are improving every year. Their prices are becoming more affordable. More and more people are finding use for this modern technology.

In order to take advantage of all the capabilities of your scanner, you must configure this device correctly. Of course, with the advent of Plug and Play technology, which allows you to automatically configure and connect various devices to a personal computer, it has become much easier. Accordingly, the device can be simply connected to your computer. But in other situations, you may need to perform a series of installation steps in the following sequence.

How to set up a scanner

  1. Connect the scanner to your computer. In this case, the operating system installed on your computer will try to recognize the connected device, configure and install it.
  2. In the Control Panel menu of the Start button, find the Scanners and Cameras folder. In the folder you will see all the imaging devices that are already paired with your computer. If the connected scanner is in this list, then this device is connected automatically. If it is not in the folder, then you need to run the scanner installation wizard.
  3. In manual mode, find the model name of your device. If your model is not in the list, then you need to install the disk that came with the scanner. When inserting the disc into your computer's drive, select the "Have from disc" command. Then you need to select the path where the scanner driver is located. Typically, the installation driver is placed in a folder that contains the name of your device model. If there are no driver disks, download them online from the manufacturer's page of the scanner you are installing. In this case, you need to specify the path to the folder where you will save the downloaded drivers.
  4. Next, the installation wizard will ask you to specify the port to which you are connecting the device. When in doubt about choosing a port, select the "Automatic port detection" command.

Finally, you need to give a name to the device in the system. Now the device can work with any of the image processing programs.
