The Chinese brand Alcatel has acquired a good reputation and fame in Russia. TCL Mobile produces reliable smartphones at an affordable price and is one of the best manufacturers in China. It occupies far from the first place in such ratings, but the models it represents deserve attention.

In 2017, TCL Mobile presented the budget Alcatel PIXI 4 Plus Power. The smartphone has collected a lot of positive reviews from unassuming buyers. Even in 2018, this model is in demand. What's special about PIXI 4 Plus Power? The answer to this question will be revealed in the review below.

Design

The gadget looks stylish in its price category. The design features small grooves along both sides of the phone, making the device easier to hold in your hand. The embossed back cover prevents slipping.

The Plus in the model name indicates the rather large size of the device. Device dimensions: 78.3x152x9.9 mm. The weight is 202 grams. Of course, not everyone will feel comfortable holding such a bulky “shovel” in their hand, but this drawback will not outweigh the “goodies” of the phone.

The case material is plastic, which corresponds to the price of the model. Some users note that the removable back cover is flimsy, but protective cases help out here. The lid is not designed rationally: when opening it is easy to damage the button pushers. You should be careful and try to disassemble your smartphone as little as possible.

The model is available in several colors: black, white, orange, green, blue. The buyer has a choice: stick to the classic version or stand out from the crowd.

The front panel contains three standard touch keys, a front camera, a flash, an LED indicator and a speaker. On the back there is a rear camera, a flashlight and a speaker. On the right side of the case, in the usual places for Android smartphone users, there is a power button and a volume control. A standard headphone jack is built in at the top, and at the bottom there is a micro USB socket for charging the device and a microphone.

Display

The 5.5-inch screen takes up 70 percent of the phone's front panel. It is framed by a black or white frame depending on the color of the case. The IPS matrix with HD resolution and wide viewing angle will allow you to watch videos comfortably. The image size is 1280x720 pixels, which corresponds to the budget line. Aspect ratio: 16 to 9 is maintained according to European and Asian standards.

The built-in light sensor will automatically adjust the screen brightness so that information is readable and energy consumption is saved. In bright sunlight, the display will not provide a clear image. However, inexpensive models rarely cope with work in the sun. An auto-rotate function is also installed, which quickly responds to the owner’s actions.

The bright display with a clear image will not disappoint consumers with modest demands. In addition, the manufacturer claims that the screen is scratch resistant. True, there is no oleophobic coating, so you will have to protect yourself from fingerprints with protective glass or film.

operating system

The smartphone's operating system is Android 6. Updates are searched for automatically and installed after connecting to a Wi-Fi network. Flexibility of settings and a clear interface are constant companions of this system.

CPU

The Pixi 4 Plus Power has a weak processor by modern standards. MediaTek MT6580 is a common processor in Chinese phones. Four cores and a maximum frequency of 1300 Mhz meet the requirements of a budget smartphone. This hardware is not suitable for active games. However, it will handle light toys at low and medium settings. The main thing is to monitor the temperature of the smartphone so that it does not overheat.

Memory

The device was deprived of RAM. 1 Gb is not enough for a modern device, but this model copes with multitasking. When loaded with heavy applications, it may begin to slow down.

The volume of built-in memory is 16 Gb. If desired, you can add a microSD memory card. Here the manufacturer has set a limitation: the memory card capacity should not exceed 32 GB.

Dual SIM

Two full slots for micro SIM are hidden under a removable cover. Next to them is a separate slot for a memory card.

Classic slots win over fragile retractable designs. There is no need to constantly keep the key at hand and choose what is preferable: additional memory or a second number and tariff. It's also a hassle to put card slots back in the first time a consumer encounters it.

Autonomy

The smartphone is equipped with a built-in Li-Ion battery with a capacity of 5000 mAh. Some users consider the non-removable battery to be a disadvantage because it cannot be replaced by yourself. However, if used properly, the battery will last for several years. The question of replacing the battery may not arise.

According to consumer reviews, the smartphone can hold a charge for more than a week with low load. Constant games and Internet surfing drain the battery within a day. First of all, Alcatel PIXI 4 Plus Power is a communication tool and organizer. In this mode, the charge will last up to a week. This phone is not entertainment oriented.

You can fully charge a capacious battery in a couple of hours, since the smartphone is equipped with fast charging technology.

Power bank mode

The word Power in the model name is not accidental. The phone can act as a portable battery. Smart watches and other portable electronics with a micro USB charging socket will quickly recharge from the PIXI 4 Plus Power. To do this, they need to be connected to an unusual power source using a special cable included in the kit.

Communication and navigation

The smartphone operates in the three most common GSM frequency bands: 900, 1800 and 1900. Supports SIM cards of all Russian telecom operators. To connect to the Internet, networks are used: GPRS, EDGE, 3G or Wi-Fi. Connects to other devices via Bluetooth.

It is important to note that this device can be used as a USB modem, Wi-Fi router and Bluetooth modem. Not every budget model can boast of such functions. PIXI 4 Plus Power is capable of distributing Wi-Fi to 8 devices simultaneously, as well as providing Internet access from a computer when connected via a USB cable.

The phone supports GPS satellite navigation with the A-GPS add-on. This allows you to quickly track your device's location and get directions based on built-in map applications. It is worth considering that due to errors, such coordinates are not always reliable.

Unlock

There is no fingerprint scanner here. A short press on the power button and swiping your finger up from the bottom of the screen will open access to the interface. There are also classic ways to protect the device from strangers in the form of setting passwords.

Interface

The interfaces of Android phones are similar. The status bar on the Pixi 4 Plus Power desktop has been changed. The battery charge is displayed with a fairly large icon, which emphasizes the main feature of the phone. The clock and date are located in the center of the display. The lock screen contains notifications and shortcuts.

There are many applications installed on your phone by default. You can add to the collection from Google Play and the Alcatel store. Applications download in the background and do not interfere with your work.

Camera

The camera quality leaves much to be desired. If you need a phone that can take clear, beautiful pictures, then it is better to pass by this model. Rear camera – 8 MP, front – 2 MP.

Street photos take on rich colors, but with a yellowish tint and noise. Indoors, with autofocus, photos come out with slight blur. Using a flash removes the “soapiness”, but the quality remains far from ideal. It's easy to imagine how the phone takes photos at night in poor lighting.

Example of a photo indoors with flash:

Still from a video taken on a clear day:

On a phone, the camera is an addition to the main functionality, so you shouldn’t demand too much from it. Even a simple point-and-shoot camera will take better pictures.

Video calls, reminder pictures (for example, a schedule or other information), acceptable video quality - this is what you can count on when purchasing this device.

Sound

The sound quality is no better or worse than other phones in the budget segment. The smartphone is equipped with optimized speakers, but the sound remains average. When playing music at full volume, noise may occur. However, such a load is not recommended for all devices, since there is a danger of contact overheating. Then you will have to contact the service center.

Music and FM radio

A convenient player for listening to music is installed. It supports four formats: MP3, AAC, WAV and WMA. There are two repeat modes: one song and the entire playlist. You can pause or skip an audio file from the lock screen.

The built-in FM radio works when headphones are connected, which act as an antenna. Radio stations can be found manually or by automatic search, and the ones you like can be saved.

The manufacturer claims that the battery allows you to continuously listen to music for 120 hours. This is only possible when the screen is locked, since this part of the smartphone consumes a lot of energy.

Equipment

The device is packed in a colorful compact box.

The kit includes:

  1. A smartphone with a protective film already applied. It will prevent fingerprints and scratches from appearing on the screen. It's nice that the manufacturer took care of such a useful detail.
  2. Headphones with built-in microphone. An unremarkable headset with a 3.5 mm plug. The sound quality is good. Headphones are convenient to use for listening to music and telephone conversations.
  3. AC power adapter with 2A output current. This indicator guarantees high charging speed.
  4. Micro USB cable for charging your phone and connecting to your computer. The cable length is only 93 centimeters. This can be called a minus of the model. Sockets are not always located so that the phone does not remain suspended. Of course, stores offer a wide range of holders, but this is an additional investment of time and money.
  5. Cable for charging other devices with a micro USB plug on both sides. The plug with the red marking connects to the smartphone, and the other plug connects to portable electronics that require power.
  6. Information booklets in several languages. There are also instructions here, which rarely anyone uses. However, it is not difficult to understand the phone interface intuitively, especially if the user has already encountered the Android system.

Price

In different regions, a smartphone can be purchased at prices ranging from 5,080 to 6,500 rubles. The average price is 6200 rubles. The phone is definitely worth the money. For this price, the buyer purchases not only a high-quality smartphone with a standard set of functions, but also a 5000 mAh Power Bank.

In 2018, there are not many places left where PIXI 4 Plus Power is sold. Every year the market is replenished with new products, and the old ones have to retreat.

Customized Beeline smartphone with a 5-inch screen and 4G (LTE) support for two SIM cards. The price of the set is 5,990 rubles, together with the smartphone they give 4 free months on the “All for 500” tariff. Device category: budget smartphone with a large screen.

Actually, the smartphone is positioned as a modern budget device, with a price of 3,990 rubles, the remaining 2,000 rubles. conditionally considered payment for 4 months at the “All for 500” tariff.

In principle, they have the right to indicate a price tag of 3,900, but for this money you cannot get a smartphone even theoretically. 5,990 for a set with communication services or 7,490 rubles. if you take only the smartphone itself. Still, the price can be considered the main advantage of this model with a five-inch screen. I remember that at the beginning of the year Beeline came up with the “Second smartphone as a gift” promotion; then the idea seemed dubious to me. A description of the current Beeline promotion with Alcatel PIXI 4, as well as the characteristics of the device, can be found on the Beeline website.

The Chinese company TCL (owns the Alcatel brand) has invented a kind of “group” system for naming its products; completely different models have the same name Alcatel PIXI 4, which certainly causes confusion. Dot the i's

A traditional section for those who want to immediately understand whether it makes sense to read the review to the end. The “Technical Specifications” section does not reflect individual features, and there are plenty of these “features” in this device. Just in case, let me remind you: some of the photos have higher resolution versions, available by clicking.

4G works well, connects to the network quickly and stays on it confidently. There are no complaints about the data transfer speed. There is a slot for a microSD memory card. Two SIM cards, microSIM. The first slot is locked for Beeline, the second is without restrictions, but also without 4G support. If necessary, the SIM-lock can be removed; to do this, you need to visit a Beeline salon and write an application. The unlock code is usually sent within a few days.

The AnTuTu benchmark assigned the device 17,017 virtual “parrots”. For modern devices, even this class is not enough, and heavy games will most likely only be played on “humane” settings.

They saved money on the display; it is not IPS. However, the colors are bright, and distortion occurs only when turning in a vertical plane, and for some reason only in one direction. A resolution of 854 x 480 with a pixel density of less than 200 ppi is not enough for comfortable work; blurred fonts and fine lines are noticeable to the eye. The brightness margin is decent, and in sunny weather the display is readable. But there is no automatic brightness adjustment, only manually.

The main camera is 8 MP without autofocus, the pictures are frankly bad, despite all these megapixels. It only makes sense to take pictures in good weather. The same applies to the 5 MP front camera. But the front camera has its own separate flash. Color rendering is tolerable, but nothing more. There is a blue LED event indicator.

There is no separate multimedia speaker, which is good and bad at the same time. The voice during a conversation is transmitted perfectly and without distortion (for a voice there is a significant power reserve), but for a call it is not enough, it is clearly quiet. When playing video, this is not so critical (the speaker “looks” directly at you), but calls in noisy places may not be heard.

Noise reduction during conversations works (two microphones). The headset is included. The 3.5 mm jack is standard. The removable 2,000 mAh battery lasts a full day of average load, but nothing more.

For its 5-inch screen, the smartphone does not look thick. The designers clearly didn’t take advantage of the grams of weight, and the device feels massive in the hand (169 grams). It was assembled with high quality, but I was disappointed by the back without a coating and even without a notch on the surface. There are several color options, but otherwise there is no design.

Positioning

Everything is simple with it: a device for those who want a large screen and support for the modern 4G standard. And all this for the lowest possible fee. The 5 MP front camera with flash can also work as an enticement. Probably, the Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system will also be an additional advantage for some.

It seemed to me that the device was too heavy for most girls. At the same time, the smartphone is uninteresting in appearance, despite the different color options.

Equipment and design

Complete set: smartphone, connecting cable, wired headset, short “Getting Started” guide, “Safety Information”, warranty card. I didn't have the user manual. Either they forgot to put it in, or considered it an excess. Charger for output current 0.55 A (!!). I hope there is a 2 A charger on hand; with a standard adapter, the smartphone can be fully charged in five to five and a half hours. Thank you for not saving on the headset; nowadays it is increasingly not included in budget smartphones.

I already wrote about thickness and weight. The device with classically rounded corners looks completely ordinary without any special features or design flourishes. The choice of colors for the back cover is rich, this somewhat compensates for the ordinary appearance.

Pay attention to the white device. This particular option is interesting because the front panel is also white and the smartphone does not give the impression of a standard one, on which a cover of a different color was simply put on.

Design Features

There are no questions about the assembly. Everything is tight, without cracks, does not move. In one review I read about a slight crunch in my hands when squeezing, so I squeezed the device with all my heart, everything is fine. Perhaps the author of the review did not fully seat one of the latches during assembly, this happens. The back cover is not pressed through. There is no play in the buttons.

The layout is standard - “tray”. The battery is removable, the camera eye almost does not protrude beyond the dimensions. Only a fraction of a millimeter of metal edging protects the glass of the camera eye from scratches. There is no separate multimedia speaker, and accordingly, there are no additional holes in the back cover. Thanks to the use of a voice speaker as a universal speaker, the sound is not muffled when the phone is lying even on a soft surface.

There's something I don't understand about the speaker design. If we decided to abandon a special multimedia speaker and make the voice one a universal one, then how could we hide this speaker under a gap less than 1 mm wide, and then cover this gap with a metal plate with tiny holes? How can sound break through all these barriers? If they had made the gap three times wider and covered it with a thin mesh, there wouldn’t have been hundreds of complaints about the bell being too quiet.

The second microphone (for noise reduction during a call) is in the upper left corner next to the standard 3.55 jack for headphones or headsets. As I already wrote, there are no complaints about the sound during a call, but the ringer volume is insufficient.

The buttons are silver “metal-like” and protrude just right. The power button and volume rocker are both on the right side, but the travel of the keys is short and clear, their “joint” placement does not interfere with taking screenshots. I remember I had a blast with some smartphone; I was only able to take a screenshot with the buttons next to it on the third or fifth attempt.

All three control buttons are software, they saved on the backlight, it is not there. They are difficult to see in the twilight; in the dark at first it’s a real disaster. Then you’ll get used to it, it’s not fatal. But there is an LED event indicator that helps save battery power. Think about how many times a day you turn on your screen just to check if you missed something important. It’s a pity that the indicator is one-color (light blue) and you can only focus on the presence/absence of its blinking. By the way, many programs allow you to set the blinking frequency of the indicator, this is a “note to the hostess.”

Display

The screen, unfortunately, is not IPS. 5 inches, TFT-TN, 16.78 million colors, 854 x 480, pixel density 196 ppi. In the photo above you can see the level of grain. The resolution of 854 x 480 with a pixel density of 196 ppi is not exciting, I would like more. The matrix itself is not bad in its class and the colors are saturated. White balance is more or less normal, although there is a slightly bluish tint. It's a shame that the smartphone does not use MiraVision technology, which allows you to perfectly adjust the color temperature; MiraVision would be very useful on this matrix.

The screen is responsive, but only responds to 2 simultaneous touches. The display gets fairly dirty, but I strongly doubt the presence of an oleophobic coating, because the usual procedure of wiping the screen on a T-shirt on your own abdomen was not enough to remove dirt.

When the display is rotated in a vertical plane, the colors are distorted; when rotated in a horizontal plane, the effect is almost invisible. Moreover, in the vertical plane, the tilt of the upper part of the device towards itself is critical. Simply put, if you are going to watch a video together, then it is better for the first viewer to sit directly opposite the screen, and the second one to the right of the first, and not to the left.

Cameras

There are two cameras: a main 8 MP without autofocus and a front 5 MP, also without it. The description on the Beeline website indicates the presence of autofocus, but this is either an error or this “autofocus” does not work. The third version - we adjusted the technical conditions for financial reasons and installed the cheapest one we could find. There is no point in guessing, the end result is important. And the result is sad for you and me.

There is a single LED flash on both cameras (on the front one too), this is advertised on the box and on the factory sticker and is considered a competitive advantage. The flashes are weak, and the flash of the main camera is almost useless. The front flash will somehow illuminate the face, but it’s still better not to show the result to anyone.

A traditional “advertising” shot of a playground, taken in excellent lighting conditions. White balance is more or less ok, but sharpness is unimportant even in ideal shooting conditions. And it's 8 MP! About six years ago, my mid-budget Samsung took better pictures with its 2 MP camera (also without autofocus).

Even in a well-lit hall of a shopping center, the white balance “goes away”, and unpredictably, often towards greenery. The sharpness is also sad, the above is one of the relatively successful examples, others were worse.

Another example of indoor photography. Don’t think that I managed to consume one of these advertised “tasty and inexpensive” products. I didn’t use it, and my little hands didn’t tremble.

Trying to photograph documents is almost useless. Something in fairly large print on an A4 sheet can still be difficult to read, choosing the best result from several attempts. Small text (see right, brochure measuring 10 x 12 cm) makes no sense even trying to remove it.

You know, I like to tinker with the camera of an inexpensive smartphone and look for the right approach to it, it’s interesting. Usually it is possible to find obvious weaknesses, learn to “circumvent” these problems and get an acceptable result. But there’s no desire to even bother here and, most likely, it’s useless.

Of course, you can photograph something with such a main camera of as much as 8 megapixels. For example, close-ups from a distance of one and a half to two meters in good lighting conditions can look good.

Large (20 x 20 cm) and bright car stickers also turned out to be quite readable. By the way, they are now being sold at a big discount. Is it possible to save a pack or two or three for 2018 for pennies, what if your small business burns out?

The front camera turned out to be even worse. No wonder, it’s “only” 5 megapixels! I am increasingly thinking that this is some kind of planned sabotage of the manufacturers. The numbers in the descriptions are beautiful, but a person will suffer for a couple of months with these pseudo-megapixels, then he will go to the salon for a device of a higher class and will be happy without any super-flagships. This concludes the conversation about cameras. Yes, I almost forgot to write: the device shoots videos with a resolution of 1280 x 720.

Benchmarking and sensors

Serious gamers are of little interest in benchmark numbers for inexpensive smartphones. It is clear that the heaviest and most resource-intensive games are written for top models. But it’s still useful to get your bearings and understand what we can expect when purchasing.

AnTuTu rating - 17017 virtual parrots, comparison with other devices, see the screenshot on the right. There is no point in comparing with the flagship leaders; these are different weight categories. But personally, I didn’t like the fact that the Beeline Fast smartphone, which was sold three months ago, showed much better performance in the form of 23,275 parrots. Despite the fact that this “Beeline Fast” was the twin brother of the current Alcatel PIXI 4 (5) in size and display resolution, and their other components are almost the same. Those interested can read our March review of Beeline Fast.

Processor, memory and display according to AnTuTu. The indicated pixel density (240 ppi) is an optimistic joke, far from reality. In fact, taking into account the screen diagonal of 5 inches, this is 196 ppi. Otherwise, everything corresponds to the stated data. You should also remember that the indicated internal memory capacity of 8 GB does not take into account the space occupied by the operating system and other add-ons. In ideal cases (pure Android without add-ons), a little more than 4 GB will remain free for us; in the case of the Alcatel PIXI 4, this is 3.6 GB of space. An additional 32GB microSD card is a must-have accessory.

Present sensors. There’s nothing to look at on the list, but you had to make sure of this “nothing,” you’ll agree.

About software updates

I read a lot of complaints about the software from those who bought the smartphone at the beginning of sales. Most of the complaints were “little things”, but there were serious complaints. For example, to one-way audibility in communication programs. At the end of June, a software update was released for the smartphone, and, as far as I understand, most of the problems were eliminated. The update arrives within 1-3 days after activating the smartphone, and I would advise you not to make hasty conclusions before it arrives on the purchased device.

Impressions from work

Let's start with a small thing that almost half of those who bought this device complain about: the painfully long time it takes to fully charge the battery. They write that until 5 o'clock. No wonder, the supplied adapter delivers a current of only 0.55 A maximum. Very strange. It seemed to me that the included adapter in the box with the smartphone had a current less than 1.0 A, the last time I saw it was several years ago. From a 2.0 A adapter, our Alcatel PIXI 4 charges, as it should, in two and a half hours. After all, the charging current is controlled by the smartphone itself, which still won’t take in excess, and it’s unclear why it was “put on a diet” of a maximum current of 0.55 A.

As for the battery capacity, 2000 mAh is not enough for a device with two SIM cards, 4G support and a 5-inch screen. Despite the fact that the manufacturer is unlikely to greatly limit itself in terms of dimensions and weight, this can be seen in the size and weight of the device. The difference between 2000 and 2500 mAh seems to be small, but it often turns out to be decisive in the question of whether a smartphone will survive until the evening on a full charge.

Another strange feature is the nonlinearity of the display. My smartphone consumed the last 25% of its charge in 20 minutes of not very active use, then it grunted and after another minute it turned off. Apparently, it will take two or three full charge/discharge cycles to calibrate the meter. If it doesn’t help, then this phenomenon will turn out to be another source of complaints from irritated users.

Now about data transfer. I (and not only me) have always liked Alcatel radio units for their good sensitivity and overall behavior. Our Alcatel PIXI 4 did not disappoint in this sense either. Switches between 4G/3G quickly, holds on to 4G well. I was also pleased with the sensitivity.

It is clear that the speed depends primarily on the network, but the smartphone is not embarrassed to take what the network gives. One time I was simply surprised: on the Moscow Beeline 3G network, at a distance of half a kilometer from the base station, with obstacles in the form of houses and triple-glazed windows, the smartphone delivered 25 Mbit/s. I wish it were like this always and everywhere, “but this is fantasy, son.”

Speeds on the Beeline 4G (LTE) network are also very good, 40-45 Mbit/s. But here the signal was better (BS closer), plus it was a day off. In fact, almost no one needs all these “Olympic speed records”. What is more important is stable operation without fading and short response time. In this sense, LTE is much nicer than 3G, and buying a smartphone without 4G support is irrational. Unless you are sure that you will change the device for another new one before the 4G network appears in your region.

The screenshot above is smartphone access via Wi-Fi from a home Internet router. A symmetrical channel of 20 Mbit/s (we don’t need it at home anymore), it’s good to use for checking different devices. In this scenario, there are no complaints about the Alcatel PIXI 4; I see exactly the same numbers on other devices connected to the home Internet via Wi-Fi.

The smartphone coped with the distribution of Beeline mobile Internet via Wi-Fi successfully and without any particular losses, the average speed reduction is about 10% compared to direct measurement on the Alcatel PIXI 4. Of course, this is at a distance of 5-7 meters, with increasing distance the effectiveness of such distribution falls quickly.

Other little things

Details that were noticed in the process of mastering this masterpiece of high technology. I hope it will be useful to someone.

  • After a restart or power off/on, in about 33% of cases I received the alarm message “SIM card not detected!” And the advice is to urgently check the presence of a SIM card in the device. Do not immediately rush to pick out the cover; after a few minutes, the desired SIM card will materialize without your participation.
  • The data transmission indication along with the corresponding H/H+/4G icon may sometimes disappear for about 10 minutes, but Internet access continues to work normally. This is a problem in the “Should you check or go?” category, don’t pay attention.
  • It is impossible to “lock” the device in “4G-only” mode. Indeed, there is an “Auto” mode (4G/3G/2G), a “No 4G” mode (3G/2G), as well as “3G-only” and “2G-only” modes. There is no “4G-only” mode. This is not a defect, the solution looks logical: without VoLTE (voice over LTE networks), voice calls in “4G-only” mode will not go through. A smartphone must first of all provide voice communication, and the inaccessibility of the “4G-only” mode can be considered “foolproof.”
  • To “treat” a quiet call, the forum advises downloading and playing an mp3 melody that is louder and more cheerful. They write that it helps.

Summary

As a budget solution with a large screen, the device is acceptable. Provided that you take few and rare photographs. For active Internet use, a smartphone is not bad. For the rest, see for yourself. Not everyone will find the listed shortcomings critical, but they should be soberly assessed in advance, even before purchasing the device.
