The device is TWAIN- and WIA-compatible (WIA - Windows Imaging Application). The product works with Windows programs that support TWAIN- or WIA-compatible scanning devices, and Macintosh programs that support TWAIN-compatible scanning devices.

In a TWAIN- or WIA-compatible program, you can access the scanning function and scan an image directly into the open program. For more information, see the help file or documentation that came with your TWAIN- or WIA-compatible program.

Scanning with a TWAIN-compatible program

Typically, a TWAIN-compatible program contains commands such as Acquire, File Acquire, Scan, Import New Object, Insert from, and Scanner. If you are unsure about program compatibility or do not know which command to call, refer to the help or documentation for the program.

When scanning from a TWAIN-compatible program, the HP LaserJet Scan software may start automatically. Once HP LaserJet Scan starts, you can preview the image and make any necessary changes. If the program does not start automatically, the image will be transferred to a TWAIN-compatible application immediately.

Start a scan from a TWAIN-compatible application.

Scanning from a WIA-compatible program

WIA is another way to scan an image directly into an application such as Microsoft Word. WIA uses Microsoft software instead of HP LaserJet Scan to scan.

Typically, a WIA-compatible program will include commands such as Drawing/From Scanner or Camera in the Insert or File menu.

In the Scanners and Cameras folder, double-click the device icon. This will open the standard Microsoft WIA wizard, which will allow you to scan to file.

Scanning with optical character recognition (OCR) software

You can use a third-party OCR program to import scanned text into a word processor for editing.

Scanning a document or photo on your computer will create a TIF file.

Scanning a document to send by email will create a .PDF file.

Scanning the photo to send via email will create a JPEG file.

When using the scanning program, you can select different file types.

Scanner resolution and color rendering

Unsatisfactory quality when printing scanned images is in many cases caused by incorrect resolution and color settings in the scanner software. Resolution and color rendering affect the following settings in scanned images.

Image clarity

Gradation texture (smooth or rough)

Scan time

file size

Scanning resolution is measured in pixels per inch (ppi).

Scan resolution (dpi) and print resolution (measured in dots per inch) are not interchangeable.

Color rendering, grayscale, and black and white rendering affect the number of possible colors. The scanner's hardware resolution can be increased to 1200 ppi. Using software, the resolution can be increased to 19200 ppi. The following color rendering modes are available: 1 bit (black and white image) and from 8 bit (256 shades of gray or color image) to 24 bit (realistic color rendering).

The Resolution and Color Settings table provides basic guidelines for selecting scanning options.

Selecting higher resolution and color settings may result in larger file sizes and slower scanning speeds. Before setting resolution and color settings, determine the purpose for which you will use the scanned image.

Scan quality

Over time, dirt that accumulates on the scanner glass and white plastic lining can affect the operation of the device. To clean the scanner glass and white plastic backing, follow the instructions below.

4. To prevent stains, wipe the glass and lining dry with a suede cloth or cellulose sponge.
