The upgrade to windows 10 is reserved when it arrives. We refuse the reserve for a copy of the new OS. How to reserve an update

Today I discovered a new Windows logo icon in the taskbar notification area. What it is? After double-clicking, the "Get Windows 10" window opened - is it time already? The window prompts you to "Reserve" a free upgrade to Windows 10, which will automatically download when it becomes available. At the same time, it is possible to cancel the reservation if you suddenly change your mind.

Below I will show what's what in this application and what you need to do to get Windows 10 (and whether you need to do it). And at the same time about what to do if you do not have such an icon and how to remove this thing from the notification area and from the computer. Optional: Windows 10 release date and system requirements.

About Windows 10 Backup

The Get Windows 10 window describes the steps it will take to automatically download to your computer later, information about how great the new system is promised to us, as well as the Reserve a free upgrade button.

By clicking on this button, you will be asked to enter an email address for confirmation. I clicked the "Skip email confirmation" button present there.

In response - "Everything necessary has already been done" and the promise that as soon as Windows 10 is ready, the update will automatically come to my computer.

At this point in time, you can no longer do anything special, except that:

Additional Information:

  • If you don't see an icon suggesting to back up Windows 10, try running the gwx.exe file from C:\Windows\System32\GWX.
  • If you want to remove the icon from the notification area, you can simply disable it (through the notification area settings), close the GWX.exe application, or uninstall the KB3035583 update from your computer.

Why is this needed?

As for whether it is necessary to somehow back up Windows 10, I have doubts: why? After all, in any case, the update will be free and, it seems, there was no information that it might “not be enough” for someone.

I think the main purpose of running "redundancy" is to collect statistics and see how it matches Microsoft's expectations. And it is expected that immediately after the release of the new system will install a billion users around the world. And, as far as I can tell, the new OS really has every chance of quickly conquering most home computers.

Microsoft has long been talking about the release of the Windows 10 operating system. For laptops, tablets and PCs, this OS will be available on July 29th. On new laptops, the system will be a breeze to install, you just need to reserve a Windows 10 update and upgrade in the future. This rule applies to those who currently have licensed Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 installed.

Even if you have installed a pirated operating system, you can update it, as the company representatives promise. The only thing you need to know: with a pirated OS, you will not get a license for the new version 10, that is, you will have a stripped-down light version.

What to do for a guaranteed boot Windows 10

You have the opportunity to follow simple steps that will definitely help you reserve a free Windows 10 upgrade with a guarantee for future downloads. To do this, you can configure your own computer, tablet or laptop so that on the day of release it automatically downloads the consumer assembly of the operating system. Here's how it's done:

1. Click on the small Windows flag icon in the taskbar.
2. Click on "Reserve Free Notification".
3. Enter your email address to be notified when updates are downloaded in the future.

It often happens that a pop-up window does not appear even if people work on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, so we offer such a list of actions. This is how you can reserve a Windows 10 update and get it on time. The mechanism is very simple - you get a reminder that it is possible to upgrade to Windows 10 and choose a convenient time for this.

How does this happen

In fact, everything is extremely simple. If you booked an upgrade to Windows 10 or decided to install Windows 10, the installation will take a little over an hour. True, Microsoft promises installation within 20 minutes if you have a new laptop or computer. A very important role is played by the fact that the download occurs automatically. This makes it possible to be distracted and not wait until everything is fully loaded.

All Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 devices should show the icon and app if operating system updates are enabled. If you still don't see the icon, go to the Windows 10 Download Center in Control Panel and they'll definitely help you reserve your free Windows 10 upgrade for download.

We also wanted to share great news. Everyone should know that Windows 10 is free to download and install on the day Windows 10 launches, although we recommend booking a free upgrade to Windows 10 so you never miss a big day.

For the user, it may still be interesting how to remove the Windows 10 update and this is not surprising. Each user has their own taste. So let's remove:

1. In the control panel we find "Programs" and "View installed updates".
2. In the list, select the update installed by time and date.
3. Right-click and click "Delete".

This is all. There is nothing complicated, so there is a reason to install an OS update and test it. We wish you good luck in using the new Windows!

The happy times when everyone could upgrade to Windows 10 have sunk into oblivion. During the period of free distribution of 10-ki, it was enough to have on the computer the seventh or eighth version of this OS, equipped with service packs. In this case, a special “Get Windows 10” icon appeared in the system tray. By clicking on it, you found yourself the owner of a fresh copy of the latest operating system.

At some point, Microsoft decided to cover up the "freebie" and sell the product for money. Only users with disabilities still get 10 for free. If you do not want to pay money - you can pretend to be blind or deaf - no one will check this. However, if you have no reason to install Windows 10 on your computer, then it will be useful for you to know how to cancel Windows 10 automatic backup.

Microsoft does not recommend deleting the tray icon yourself. And yet it can be done without any harm to your computer. For different versions of the OS, this procedure will have its own characteristics. Therefore, we will discuss each of the specific cases separately. That is, let's look at how to cancel the Windows 10 upgrade reservation feature for Pro/Ultimate and regular versions.

Procedure for Pro/Ultimate

The "Get X" blocking for Pro/Ultimate can be done with Microsoft scripts. For version 7 of the OS, this is patch KB3065987 located at https://support.microsoft.com/ru-ru/kb/3065987. For version 8 - patch KB3065988 from https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3065988.

It is not enough to simply download and install these packages. Some more steps need to be taken:

  • Go to the "Run" window ("Win" + "R").
  • In the command input field, type the name of the Group Policy snap-in: gpedit.msc.
  • Then we go to the "Computer Configuration" => "Administrative Templates" => "Windows Components" => "Windows Update" section.
  • Turn on the "Disable updating to the latest version of Windows through Windows Update" option.

After that, the "Get X" label will disappear.

Anyone can remove the Windows 10 reservation in such a simple way. A bit more difficult is the refusal to upgrade to a new version of Windows in other editions.

To remove the reserved "X" will have to tinker with the console.

Procedure for other editions

How to cancel a Windows 10 upgrade reservation if your OS is not Pro or Ultimate? We will remove the backup shortcut as follows:

  • Right-click on the "Get X" shortcut.
  • In the context menu that opens, select View Confirmation.
  • A window will appear where you will need to click on the inscription "Cancel reservation".

Additionally, you will need to open a command prompt and enter the following three commands there.

To install a system upgrade to Windows 10, it must first be backed up. Naturally, the reserved update is completely free. Windows 10 developers enter data about the computer on the server, after which it remains only to wait for the installation notification. The point is interesting in that now the update takes place automatically. The user only needs to press the installation buttons. Backup is an important step in the installation of Windows 10, so we should dwell on it in more detail.

Procedure

It is important to understand that updating and backing up is possible only when installing activated versions of the 7th and 8th generation operating system. Interestingly, Series 7 requires Service Pack 1, while Series 8 requires Service Pack 8.1. You can download them from any source.

For users, the reservation is simplified to the primitive: now a special notification appears in the lower right corner. When it is clicked, the reserved update is queued for download. Yes, there is a queue of people who want to install a new operating system. The flow checks the compatibility of hardware and software. When a certain key is assigned, the reserved update is downloaded over the network. Then a notification comes, and you can already start installing.

When the user clicks on the information window, a message appears about adding an application. You need to click on the central button and leave your email address. It remains only to wait for the installation file to arrive.

Now, as soon as a free update appears, it will immediately start downloading over the network. Next, you will receive a notification that everything is ready. After that, you can start installing Windows 10. It should be understood that the new operating system is extremely negative about pirated software, so it will be merciless to remove it. Only licensed programs and apps that Windows 10 is compatible with will remain.

Cancel

You can cancel not only reserved, but also already installed software. For this, a special folder old is stored on the computer. Cancellation of the backup process is easily enabled in the Start menu. Rollback to the previous axis can be done already from the installed copy.

Is it worth it

At a time when Windows 10 is just another fad that many are trying to take advantage of, the compatibility of this axis still leaves much to be desired. The Start menu periodically falls off, sometimes a black screen occurs. Talking about that is a long-used topic. There are also positive aspects. The new system is faster and will be supported for a long time. Already the previous series are beginning to fade away, the developers stop making corrections for them. The sad news touched the 7th series and 8th generation.

In such a situation, you can pick up skepticism, the thought will come to mind that the new axis is complete rubbish. But in fact, this has never happened before. Each new generation is accompanied by a bunch of errors, especially during installation. They are quickly corrected by manual methods. This happens because a new product cannot be introduced without a test period. Therefore, at the initial stage, developers collect information from real users. The new product from Microsoft has added more features for application developers, so that your favorite games and programs will run faster and more colorful. Some time will pass, and everyone will already forget that there were once tangible problems with Windows 10.

The regular functionality of bringing Windows back to life in critical situations, if the system crashes, or even does not boot at all, is not very popular. Microsoft itself involuntarily contributed to the fact that ordinary users would not find this tool in the wilds of system settings. Even in the version of Windows 10, where important system settings are moved to the Settings application, in the Update and Security section you will only see the option and the mode with special boot options, which allows you to restore Windows from a system image, in fact, from a backup copy. But the function of creating this very system image must be looked for inside the control panel, and preferably under the guidance of step-by-step instructions. This will be shown below. In this article, we will look at how to create a backup copy of Windows 10 with its regular functionality and how the system restore process takes place.

1. Regular Windows 10 backup functionality

The standard backup function was inherited by Windows 10 from Windows Vista. Like third-party backup programs, a backup created using the built-in functionality is a snapshot of the system with all its settings, boot sector, installed programs, and user files stored on the system disk.

All this can be restored from a backup if Windows fails. Even if the system stops booting, you can return it to working capacity from the recovery environment called by the F8 key when the computer boots. In this environment, you can start the process of restoring the system to the state from the backup. You can get into the recovery environment of an unbootable Windows 10, if not by calling the F8 key, then in two other ways. The Windows 10 Recovery Environment is included with the system installation disc. For critical cases, you can specially prepare a Windows recovery disk, this is provided for by the regular functionality of the system.

In terms of options for calling the recovery environment of an unbootable Windows, the standard functionality as a backup tool outperforms third-party backup programs. But this is his only winning moment. In all other respects, the native functionality, alas, is far from perfect.

However, backing up Windows and restoring it using standard functionality is the basics for those who want to master the potential of the Microsoft operating system.

2. Create a system image

In Windows itself, the term "backup copy", as in third-party backup programs, is not used, but the concept of "system image" is used. For the function of creating this very image, let's go to the control panel. To do this, use the context menu on the Start button.

In the Control Panel section "System and Security" we need a subsection "Backup and Restore Windows 7".

You can also directly get into this subsection - using the system search.

Click "Create a system image".

Next, the window for selecting the storage location for the image will follow. This can be a non-system disk partition, another hard disk (internal or external), as well as network resources. There is even the option to store the system image on multiple DVDs. In our case, a partition is selected on the second connected hard drive. This is a good option for choosing where to store important data, such as an operating system backup. In the future, Windows can be restored even if the main hard drive that hosts the system partition fails. Click "Next".

Regular functionality provides not only copying the system partition with Windows, copies of existing non-system disk partitions can be included in the image. Backing up non-system data using native Windows functionality is not the best way to ensure the safety of this data due to the waste of disk space. Still, to backup user data, it is better to resort to third-party software. Therefore, in our case, the system image will include a pre-installed configuration - a partition with Windows and the space reserved by the system. Click "Next".

In the confirmation window for archiving parameters, click "Archive".

When the image creation process is completed, Windows 10 itself will offer to prepare a recovery disk for the future.

This offer should not be rejected if we are dealing with a computer device with a CD / DVD drive. And, of course, if there is an empty CD or DVD disc available. If there are serious problems with the system, it will be easier to boot from the recovery disk than to use the F8 key when booting the computer. The response time of this key is difficult to catch due to the reduced startup time of Windows 10. The version of the system 10 inherited this feature from version 8.

After inserting an empty CD / DVD-disk into the drive, click "Create Disc".

You can return to the process of creating a Windows recovery disc at any time. In the control panel window from which we started the process of creating a system image, there is a button "Create a system recovery disk".

Close the system image creation window.

That's it - now the system image will be safely stored for itself until there is no need to resuscitate Windows 10.

If there are problems with the system, the first step will be to get to its recovery environment. It is in this environment that the opportunity to apply the newly created image will appear.

3. Paths to the Windows Recovery Environment

Working system

If you have problems with Windows 10, but they do not affect its ability to boot, you can get into the recovery environment using the Settings application. In "Settings" select "Update and security".

F8 key

If Windows does not boot, you can try to get into the recovery environment in the way mentioned above using the F8 key. The key must be pressed before the Windows logo appears.

Windows 10 installation disc

The recovery environment for the current system is provided as part of its installation disk. Naturally, we are talking about the official Windows 10 installation disk. Installation disks with "self-made" assemblies of Windows can only be intended for a clean installation of a new system and do not contain the functionality of restoring the current system. Booting from a USB flash drive or DVD with the Windows 10 distribution, we go through the welcome window.

Recovery disk

Failure to boot Windows 10 is a case of using the recovery disk mentioned above. We boot from it and press any key to continue booting from the CD / DVD.

Choosing a keyboard layout

4. Windows Recovery

By any of the methods discussed above, we will get the action selection menu. In this menu, select the "Diagnostics" section, and in it - "Advanced options".

The next step is "Restoring the System Image". This is the standard tool for restoring Windows 10 from a backup.

The system is preparing for the recovery process.

The step-by-step wizard for restoring Windows from a system image will start. By default, the last created image will be selected. But if the system needs to be restored from an earlier image, you must manually specify the path to it. Click "Next".

Now click "Finish".

We confirm the start of the Windows recovery process and wait for it to complete.

After successful completion, restart the computer.

That's it - Windows 10 will return to the state it was in when the image was created. The system will have the same settings, the same installed programs, the same user files on the C drive.

Have a great day!
