Samsung Galaxy A3 - Specifications. Samsung Galaxy A3 (2016) - Specifications Video: smartphone reviews

A-series, positioned by the manufacturer as a balanced and affordable device of the middle class.

The A3 came to our test - one of the few compact smartphones on the market with a screen diagonal of 4.7 inches, which is doomed to popularity due to the lack of any decent analogues. A review of the younger model Samsung Galaxy A3 will show what the company has offered its new users and whether it is worth buying a phone for such a price.

Price and main characteristics

The cost of A3 ranges from $320. Given the small supply of RAM and built-in memory, the mark of 20,000 rubles can be considered slightly overpriced, however, Samsung and the adequate pricing that Chinese manufacturers have taught us to do is an incompatible concept.

Specifications:
display: 4.7”, SuperAMOLED HD 1280*720 px, 312 ppi;
processor: Exynos 7870 (1.6 GHz) + video accelerator Mali-T830;

The smartphone runs on Android 6.0.1 with a proprietary Grace UX shell. The phone will soon be upgraded to a new version of the operating system 7.0, the update has already been officially announced.

Equipment and appearance

The package includes:
Smartphone;
Charging unit;
USB Type C cable, adapter to microUSB;
Headphones;
Lockpick for the SIM card tray;
Documentation.

Externally, the A3 is practically no different from the older models of the A-series. The display of the smartphone is covered with 2.5D glass Corning Gorilla Glass 4, the back panel is also made of glass. All this is complemented by a metal frame, which gives the A3 the look of a very stylish and expensive gadget. Available in four body colors: gold, blue, black and grey.

The smartphone screen occupies approximately 67% of the entire area of the front side. Below it is a hardware button "Home" (part-time fingerprint scanner), as well as touch pads "Back" and "Tasks", which are highlighted at the moment of touch.

At the top of the front panel is a speaker, proximity and lighting sensors, as well as a 5-megapixel front camera. An innovation that not everyone will like is the absence of an LED event indicator.

The noise-canceling microphone and combo SIM slot are on the top.

On the left side there are only two buttons for volume control.

On the right is the screen power button and the main speaker. Such an arrangement was not chosen by chance: the sound of the speaker is not blocked if you put the phone on the front or back surface on the table.

At the bottom, there is a 3.5mm headset jack, a microphone, and a USB Type-C port.

The back of the smartphone looks a bit empty. There is only a 13-megapixel camera, a flash and the company's signature logo just below.

The back cover grini of the A3 is slightly rounded towards the metal frame. Thanks to its compact dimensions, the phone is very convenient to use, it can be easily held with one hand even on the move. The gadget is practically not felt in a trouser pocket.

The A3 enclosure is IP68 certified. The smartphone is almost completely protected from moisture and dust. It can be under water at a depth of up to 1.5 meters for half an hour. Of course, once again without the need to test protection is not worth it.

Samsung is positioning the younger model of the A-series as a gadget for active people who value compactness and convenience. The typical A3 buyer doesn't care about benchmarks or screen size. There are not so many worthy devices with a 4.7-inch screen left on the smartphone market (not counting the iPhone SE). And if you are tired of "shovels" - A3 is definitely your choice.

Screen

The Samsung Galaxy A3 is equipped with a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED display with HD resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. The pixel density is 312 ppi. You can distinguish the graininess of the picture, for this you have to peer into the display from a distance of 5-6 centimeters. During normal use of a smartphone, the screen quality does not disappoint, it has good contrast, almost maximum viewing angles and slightly oversaturated color reproduction, traditional for all Amoleds.

Also, there is no air gap between the touchscreen and the sensor. The first supports only up to 5 touches. In the smartphone settings, you can select the display mode that suits the color temperature. A software blue color filter is provided, which reduces eye strain when reading text on a white background for a long time. The display brightness is enough for comfortable use both at night and in direct sunlight.

The screen of the smartphone is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4. It is scratch-resistant and can withstand drops on hard surfaces from a height of 1-1.5 meters without noticeable damage. In the A-line of 2017, an innovation appeared - AlwaysOn Display. Now information about new events is displayed even when the screen is off. Special technology minimizes power consumption in standby mode, so using AlwaysOn has almost no effect on battery life.

Performance

Inside the smartphone is an eight-core Samsung Exynos 7 Octa 7870 chipset, made using 14nm technology. The maximum frequency is 1.6 GHz. Such a processor has already been used in the Samsung J7 model. The video accelerator Mali-T830 is responsible for the graphics.

The amount of built-in memory is 16 GB. Out of the box, the user has access to about 9.7 GB. Storage can be expanded via microSD up to 256 GB. 2 GB of RAM is enough for most everyday tasks.

The hardware component of the A3 corresponds to the average price category of smartphones. In Antutu and other benchmarks, the phone shows satisfactory results for such devices. The performance of A3 is definitely enough for the average user (web surfing, video, light games). At maximum Wot Blitz graphics settings, the smartphone produces about 35-45 frames per second, but there is a lack of performance margin, so this smartphone is definitely not for gamers.

Camera

The front 8-megapixel camera is not equipped with autofocus, so you will have to find a suitable distance to the object in the frame yourself. With the help of the built-in application, you can slightly correct the selfie.

The main 13-megapixel camera has autofocus, HDR and PRO mode (manual adjustment of white balance, ISO and exposure compensation).

The quality of pictures in normal lighting will please even sophisticated users. Frames please with a good dynamic range, detail, rich colors and accurate white balance.

At dusk, a small amount of noise appears, but they do not greatly affect the picture. The noise reduction algorithm can blur fine details.

HDR operation in an environment with a small difference in brightness does not bring the desired effect. But in the presence of a bright light source, HDR significantly improves image quality.

The maximum video resolution is Full HD at 30 frames per second.

speaker, sound quality

If the phone is in a pocket of clothing, an incoming call can easily be missed due to the low volume of the main speaker. Otherwise, its sound is quite clear, listening to music does not cause discomfort.

Standard headphones are included in the package. You should not expect anything supernatural from them, their sound quality is average. There are no complaints about the work of the conversational dynamics. The noise reduction system works at a high level, cutting out the excess from the environment. Thanks to her, you can make out the words of the interlocutor even in public transport.

Battery

Battery life depends on a 2350 mAh non-removable Li-Ion battery. Despite the small amount of battery, Samsung "keeps" on one charge for about two days in normal mode. This is due to the presence of an energy-efficient Exynos 7870 Octa processor and a Super AMOLED matrix.

In the video playback mode with the maximum screen brightness, the Galaxy A3 lasted about 17 hours. With a heavy load, the battery will sit down in about 10 hours. The smartphone does not have a fast charging mode, but, in fact, it is not needed. The phone charges up to 100% in an hour and a half. There is a power saving mode that limits the brightness of the display and the frequency of the processor.

Communication and Internet

The navigational abilities of the A3 are beyond praise. A cold start lasts no longer than 10 seconds, GPS / GLONASS quickly finds and binds to the necessary satellites.

All required LTE standards are supported. Cellular communications will work perfectly in almost any region of the CIS.

The new A-series supports Samsung Pay. For its operation, an NFC chip is built into the smartphone. Data exchange takes place via Bluetooth 4.2 and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac 2.4+5GHz. In Repeater mode, the smartphone can distribute Wi-Fi to other devices, working as an access point. It is also worth using the USB Type C interface, through which you can connect a variety of external devices to the A3.

Competitors, conclusion

What can be said about the Samsung Galaxy A3 after the test? First of all, it is a compact model for everyday tasks. There are not so many smartphones with a screen diagonal of 4.7 inches on the market. A3 can offer full protection against moisture and dust, good battery life and a quality camera. The smartphone is suitable for people with an active lifestyle who value compactness and simplicity.

But some buyers are outraged about the price of the device. In their opinion, the Galaxy A3 is significantly inferior in terms of technical characteristics to Chinese smartphones, the cost of which is almost three times less. But it should be understood that these are players of different weight categories, oriented to completely different audiences.

The main rivals of the model are iPhone SE and Sony Xperia X Compact. The advantage of the first is a better camera. However, the iPhone is significantly more expensive, has a completely different design, and does not have an AlwaysOn Display. X Compact is similar in technical specifications. Again, it is more expensive and not waterproof.

The situation with smartphones on the market today is clear - faster, bigger, stronger. The Chinese brothers set the trend - there are few phones with a diagonal of less than 5 ", and they mainly belong to the frankly budget segment. The more interesting is the offer from Samsung - Galaxy A3.

Smartphone Samsung Galaxy A3 is the youngest model in the line. In general, the A line from the Korean manufacturer is a mid-range device for those who need a nice design, and, at the same time, there is no need for top-end features of the S series. Last year, the case of these devices, this year the material was changed to tempered glass, leaving only a metal chassis. The solution is quite obvious - firstly, in this form, the smartphone looks more interesting, and secondly, making metal smart phones is more expensive - you need a special antenna design so that there are no problems with the signal level.

Of course, glass is less resistant to shock than metal, however, as practice shows, the screen remains the most vulnerable spot in smartphones. Paradoxically, but the fact is that repairmen told me from such an anomalous distribution - for some reason, in glass smartphones, the display is broken much more often than the back wall. Here such here implementation of the law of a sandwich. So, do not worry too much about the fragility of the new A-series.

Characteristics
But back to the smartphone itself. Let's start with the technical specifications. Since the devices are really very similar (they look almost like twin brothers, but kept on different diets), I will give everything just in case, especially since the review of the Samsung Galaxy A5 will soon be released on the main portal site.

So, as you can see, the characteristics of our reviewed of the whole trinity are the simplest. There is no dual-band Wi-Fi, no optical camera stabilization and no fingerprint sensor. Also, there is no Quick Charge, however, the battery capacity is quite modest, the need for fast charging is doubtful.

Memory - a reasonable minimum (it is almost impossible to work with 1 GB of memory, but with 1.5 it is quite possible). But there is NFC and support for memory cards (according to the latter, the owners of Samsung S-series devices suffer the most).

The processor is also the simplest of the line - 4 cores, with a maximum core frequency of 1.5 GHz. However, this is enough for a 720p display (see the tests at the end of the review). The display itself is traditionally bright and contrasty. People who can see the effect of PenTile notice it well - nevertheless, the density of dots on the screen is far from being the highest.

Unfortunately, the smartphone came to us without retail packaging, so we can not say anything about the package. Most likely, it will be a microUSB charging / sync cable, a wall charger and inexpensive headphones.

Appearance and location of ports and connectors
On our test, we had a white version of the device (it is called, as expected, "White Pearl". Also on sale will be black "Black Sapphire" and gold "Dazzling Platinum" versions).

I was at the presentation and had the opportunity to hold the entire series in my hands in all colors, and so, in my opinion, it is the white version of the A3 that looks the most impressive - the glossy glass of the back surface and the slightly curved 2.5D screen cover go well with the rough, as if cut down aluminum chassis. At the same time, the smartphone is extremely neatly arranged, and due to its small size it definitely wins in the appearance category over its more powerful, but also wide-legged counterparts.

The arrangement of elements is traditionally very similar to the Apple iPhone 6, however, there is no direct copying, rather there is a very accurate quoting. Whatever it was, the device looks very good.

On the back of the device is a massive, slightly protruding camera, and to the side of it is an LED flash. Despite the fact that the module could not be flush with the surface, it protrudes quite a bit, and practically does not cling. On the table, the device also lies flat.

On the right side there is a power button, as well as a tray in which two SIM cards are installed, or a SIM card and microSD.

Below - a connector for charging and synchronization, as well as an audio jack. Pay attention to the location of the technological holes - yes, this is exactly the Apple iPhone 6 quote that I was talking about.

On the left side are two volume buttons.

Above you can see only the microphone used for noise reduction.

On the front side, you can see the camera, as well as the proximity and light sensor. Below is the only physical button (and again this is a quote). Double clicking on it, by the way, calls the camera - very convenient. The touch buttons have not gone away, but for some reason they are highlighted only after being pressed or immediately after unlocking, in other cases, even when the screen is on, you have to poke at random.

Shooting quality
Let's move on to photography. Despite the fact that the sensors are equal in characteristics, and the camera modules differ only in optical stabilization, the difference in image quality is significant. Unfortunately, I don't have any photos from the A5 and A7, but the A3 is very mediocre. Clicking on a photo will take you to a gallery where you can explore the original photos if you wish.

Having installed my entire traditional set of programs (and there is a lot of software, more than 40 titles), which includes all social network clients, instant messengers, bank clients, mail checkers, I did not notice any special slowdowns. Yes, sometimes the smartphone really behaved thoughtfully (1.5 GB of RAM affected), but if the user does not load so much into his device, then you can live.

Battery life
Despite the low battery capacity, a relatively economical quad-core processor and a screen with a small (by today's times) resolution does its job. The smartphone confidently withstood a full day of battery life, with maximum activated synchronization, and with constant work with mail and social network clients. The battery life in reading mode was about 15 hours, in video mode - 13 hours, in 3D games mode - about 5 hours. You need to understand that at the moment a non-final firmware is installed in the smartphone, its real battery life can vary significantly.
Total
Finally, let's talk a little about prices and decide on the buyers of the smartphone. On Samsung Galaxy A3 2016 smartphones, it is expected to be around 20,000 rubles. Is it a lot or a little? On the one hand, those who like to delve into the characteristics will rightly note that such specs are now already available for very average Chinese with a cost half as much. On the other hand, the smartphone really looks extremely impressive, and its performance, in general, is sufficient for an ordinary user who does not run dozens of heavy toys on the device.

It seems to me that this device is for a female student of a non-technical university, who, for some reason, does not want to buy an old iPhone for herself, and at the same time uses a smartphone for simple tasks - surfing the net, social networks, watching Youtube and listening to music . The main feature of the smartphone is a really great appearance, with sufficient characteristics.

Positioning

The A-series from Samsung was created for the middle segment, this is the second generation of devices that received the prefix 2016, that is, we should expect models A3 2017, A3 2018 and so on. The first generation was a bestseller, chosen not so much for performance as for appearance, body materials and overall build quality, as well as for the brand. Chinese smartphones from little-known companies for the same money can offer a larger set of features, but the case materials may differ for the worse, the operating time will not be better, and in general it is a lottery. Sales have proven that most buyers reason like this and focus on well-known brands in order to get a guarantee, as well as to understand what exactly they bought.

Sales of the previous A3 model showed that people choose this device when they need a solution with average performance, primarily for calls, SMS, social networks, and the size of such a device is very important, they do not want a large screen diagonal, as they do not sit for hours online, do not play three-dimensional toys for hours on end. Another wish that was expressed was the operating time, so that the phone could last a day or two under heavy load. And in this aspect, the 2015 A3 turned out to be successful, buyers considered it simple and reliable, hence the maximum sales in its price segment.

Samsung Galaxy A3 2015

There were some complaints, performance was not always enough for some, some of the young A3 users wanted to run races with good graphics without fail, and the speed of the phone made these attempts not the best thing to do. They tried to fix all these points in the updated 2016 model.

In terms of positioning, A3 2016 is also aimed at young people and children (the first high-quality phone for adult life), those who are not looking for a large diagonal and mainly use the phone for calls, SMS, the Internet and social networks, and without fanaticism and being in them hours. The fact that this device has a minimum diagonal for the A-series, which is 4.7 inches and is comparable to the iPhone, also indicates that most consumers perceive this form factor with a bang, and they are pleased with the size. This is a very good solution for everyday use by ordinary consumers, those who do not have any sky-high requests. It has several disadvantages that stem from use cases, and as part of the review, we will dwell on them in more detail.

Design, dimensions, controls

The entire A-series is built from the same materials, the models look the same, even the color schemes are repeated. The difference is only in their sizes, which follow from the diagonal of the screen, while the thickness of the cases is the same for all.

The design of the line is directly borrowed from the company's flagship - Galaxy S6. A metal case in which not only the screen, but also the back panel is covered with glass. The glass has a slight curvature, it is fashionable in the last year 2.5D, the glass itself is Corning Gorilla Glass 4.

Given that the device is aimed at the widest possible audience, it comes out in four colors at once - gold, black, white, rose gold.

Each color has a metallic sheen, plays well in the sun. Handprints remain on the rear panel, they are clearly visible indoors, those who are disgusted by this will not be happy with the phone. Small bevels of the panels are pleasant in the hands, but on a table or an inclined surface they do not create a sliding effect, the device lies well.

Galaxy A3 2015 and A3 2016

Phone dimensions - 134.5x65.2x7.3 mm, weight - 132 grams. It's compact, feels good in the hand, and the only downside is that some people find it slippery. As a rule, this is an absentee judgment, since even in wet hands the device does not slip. But it is possible that someone's individual characteristics are such that the apparatus slips. I have never seen this.

There is a microphone on the top and bottom ends, there is a noise reduction system that works well in noisy environments.

Two separate volume keys are located on the left side, the on / off button is on the right. There is also a slot for two SIM-cards (nano), instead of one of them you can install a memory card.

On the rear panel you can see a 13-megapixel camera, it protrudes above the body, which does not interfere with life in the slightest. Next to it is an LED flash. At the bottom there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a speaker hole.

You will see the proximity and light sensor above the screen, but below it there is a physical key, on the sides there are two touch ones. They have a blue backlight. Unfortunately, this model does not have a fingerprint sensor, the A5 and A7 have this sensor. For those who are used to protecting their device with a password, this will be a certain inconvenience. You get used to the sensor quickly and then you can no longer use the devices without it, it becomes uncomfortable. If you did not have such a phone and you are used to entering numbers or a pattern in the old fashioned way, then you will not feel the problem. For example, my daughter has been using A3 2015 for almost a year, the updated model has become comfortable for her, no complaints or problems. But it was very difficult for me without a sensor.

Another point is the absence of an LED event indicator, it simply does not exist here. A trifle, but I would like to see such a sensor, it can come in handy in different situations.

Display

The technical characteristics of the screen are as follows: 4.7 inches, 1280x720 pixels (312 ppi), SuperAMOLED, Corning Gorilla Glass 4, with 2.5D effect. This is one of the best screens in its class, although it does not have the highest resolution, but with such a diagonal it is enough for the eyes. It is very interesting to hear complaints that people do not have enough resolution of such a screen and it seems small to them. This is something psychological, since the Retina screen on the iPhone 6s with the same diagonal has a comparable resolution - 1334x750 pixels. At the same time, the screen quality in A3 2016 is better in many aspects, the picture is livelier and brighter.

In A3 2016, it is almost impossible to find fault with the screen, it is very high quality and shows good performance in all usage scenarios, whether it is reading texts or working in the bright sun. Traditionally, in the settings you can set different color display options (Adaptive screen, AMOLED movie, AMOLED photo, main). Those who prefer muted, natural colors can get them. Those who want a brighter picture are also able to choose it. This is a matter of your choice, and not the restrictions laid down by the manufacturer.

Automatic brightness control works correctly, I use it all the time and have no problems. Of the advantages of using it, I note that on the street in this mode the screen becomes readable, in manual mode the backlight brightness is limited to lower values.

The display in the A3 is one of the best on the market and has no direct competitors in its class. For the price of a 2016 A3, you can't get anything like this from other companies.

Battery

In this device, the battery capacity is 2300 mAh (Li-Pol). During the test, we always look at how long a video device can spin (AVI, FullHD, MX Player, maximum brightness), A3 2016 works up to 13.5 hours. And this result is quite comparable with what we got for the 2016 A5, they behave the same, despite the different screen size and battery capacity.

My daughter charges the previous A3 device about once every two days, she gets about 3.5 hours of screen operation, a minimum of voice calls, but active communication on the net, watching cartoons. And this is a good result.

For her, A3 2016 was able to provide three days of work instead of two. That is, the profile itself has not changed, but the device began to work longer. And this is typical for the entire A-series in 2016, its operating time in different scenarios has increased, and this is very noticeable.

There is also a power saving mode, when the backlight of the screen, the frequency of the processor are limited, in this mode, many will not experience problems with the operation of the device, but the operating time will increase by at least 20 percent. In the maximum power saving mode, everything on the screen is painted in gray colors, and the device, even with a small charge, can provide hours of operation.

This device may well work for 2-3 days for those users who are its target audience. An interesting model that works for a long time.

Memory, RAM, performance

The characteristics of the chipset are as follows - 4-core Exynos 7578 processor, frequency up to 1.5 GHz, Mali T720 MP2 graphics coprocessor. In synthetic tests, this processor performed well, but as expected, there are no records. A definite win compared to the previous A3, which had Snapdragon 410 and was noticeably weaker in all tasks, including games.

Built-in memory in the device is 16 GB (10.7 GB available to the user), but there is also support for memory cards up to 128 GB.

RAM 1.5 GB, it is enough for all typical tasks. I would like to get more memory, but this would lead to an increase in the cost of the phone. Therefore, the memory was limited, but for such a diagonal and resolution, the memory is enough for the eyes. Also, a bet was made on the fact that a typical user of such a model does not run dozens of heavy applications. But even if he does, they are unloaded from memory, and no problems arise.

Subjectively, A3 in the standard interface works a little faster than A5 and A7. But in third-party programs, older models are noticeably faster. This is due to different chipsets and hardware optimization for different tasks, customization for different scenarios for using the phone.

Communication options

Everything is quite typical, USB version 2, there is support for NFC, Ant +, 802.11 b / g / n only in the 2.4 GHz band (older models work in two bands), BT 4.1, the built-in LTE modem supports LTE Cat.4.

Camera

All cameras in the 2016 A-series lineup are the same, which is a good thing as it delivers the same image quality no matter which camera you choose.

The front camera does not have autofocus, but it has a resolution of 5 megapixels, which is not bad, it is photosensitive (f / 1.9).

The main camera is 13-megapixel, it is similar in characteristics to the cameras that were in the flagships of last year, it produces good picture quality, as you can see for yourself. The main improvement over the previous season is that even in the dark, the pictures are pretty good. A number of modes that are on flagships are missing, there is no HDR mode for full resolution (only for 8 megapixels). But in general, the camera has grown head and shoulders in comparison with the previous generation and will satisfy even the most demanding user.

Software

The model went on sale on Android 5.1.1, but at the end of spring it will receive an update to Android 6. Inside we see a light version of TouchWiz, the same was on the Samsung S6, most of the menus and settings are the same. You can watch a detailed video that describes all the nuances of this shell.

It will be possible to download applications such as S Health, children's mode and others from the Samsung App Store to this device, even if they are not preinstalled initially.

When using KNOX, you can install any program in duplicate, for example, install two WhatsApp messengers on one device and use them for each SIM card (two numbers, two messengers). You can even chat with yourself. Exactly the same trick can be done with any software, no phone allows you to simultaneously work with two instant messengers on the same device with different numbers, this is a unique feature from Samsung.

Impression

The call quality is excellent, the volume of the call is above average, it can be heard from clothes or a bag. The vibrating alert is average in strength. The noise reduction system works well, there are no complaints about it either.

If the price of the Galaxy A5 of 2016 could be compared with the old, but actively sold iPhone 5s, and the models look the same in terms of the fashion component, then its little brother should be compared with other devices. I doubt that it can be compared with the same iPhone, the question is not in the screen (it is just different), but in the perception of models in this price group. This is a balanced solution for the mass consumer from a large company, which has the expected guaranteed quality, no surprises.

For those who want to compare the A3 of 2015 and 2016, I suggest watching our video, even with a noticeable difference in cost and a completely different aesthetics of these devices, I recommend looking at the A3 of 2016, it is on a fundamentally different level in terms of performance, perception of the model.

To close the question of how the 2016 A-series models differ, we have a separate video where I compare them and point out the differences between the devices.

There are many new and old models on the market in this price segment. It is pointless to compare this device with everyone else, I will try to show only the most significant models that fall under the target group that considers such smartphones. Let's start with the Sony Z1 Compact, this is a rather old and well-known smartphone with a screen diagonal of 4.3 inches (the resolution is the same, but the IPS matrix). For my subjective taste, the screen loses, and much, but this can be said about almost any model in this class compared to the A3 2016. Of the pluses - the former flagship of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipsets, 2 GB of RAM, a 21-megapixel camera, quality which is comparable to the gain only due to the resolution. The front camera is terrible, its resolution is 2 megapixels. You can look towards the Z3 Compact, it is included in our category in terms of size, but the price is much higher, it falls into the A5 level.

This device cannot be found on a wide sale, but if you search, you can find it at a comparable or even lower price. Of the minuses - the old version of Android, the need to find a third-party assembly. But in general, a very interesting solution, plus there is water protection (it may disappear over time, this is a sore spot for Sony).

You can look in the direction of Huawei P8 Lite, but the aesthetics of the device is completely different, it is plastic, and it is too felt. The screen is also worse, IPS, 5 inches diagonal, but 2 GB of RAM, 8-core processor, but a small battery, which also shows the worst result in real life.

With a cost in the range of 19-21 thousand rubles, depending on the distribution network, this device turned out to be very successful. The recommended retail price is 21 thousand rubles, everything below can already be considered a pleasant discount. The first weeks of sales showed that the device is in high demand, like the previous model a year ago. I really like the whole A-series, but specifically this model lacks only one thing - a fingerprint sensor, then it would not have a price. Compact, good materials, good run time. But there can't be a perfect phone, and here it is. For its audience, this is an excellent device without any discounts and assumptions. It is worth paying close attention to it.

The Samsung Galaxy A3 is a mid-range smartphone with a 4.5-inch display. It has quite a few advantages: a light and thin metal case, relatively good cameras and good autonomy. Of the identified shortcomings: low display resolution and high price. The device is suitable for the user who, when choosing a smartphone, is interested in the materials of the case and the balance of the device.

The smartphone has a nice design, however, for some reason the metal in the case was made up to look like plastic. The small diagonal of the Galaxy A3 allows you to control it with one hand, including using cameras. By the way, they are not bad for a smartphone – the main one is 8 MP and the front one is 5 MP. Of course, they do not pull up to flagship levels, but they are still good for their resolutions. The main issue for Samsung (apart from the high price) is the display. Unfortunately, its low resolution is on par with the 2013 mini-flagships at just 960x540 pixels. In all other respects, the display turned out to be good, thanks to the use of Super AMOLED technology. But in many ways, it was display issues that prevented the phone from ranking high in our smartphone rankings.

Regarding the autonomy of the Galaxy A3, we had doubts, because the phone is thin. Will it be low with a battery capacity of 1900 mAh? But the smartphone showed good results - it lasted 9 hours in HD-video mode at maximum brightness. And although it is far from the results of tests of the best smartphones, in general, it turned out to be a balanced model.

Dimensions and weight - 4.5

Many criticized Samsung's plastic phones and waited for the Korean company to finally release all-metal smartphones. And after the release of the Samsung Galaxy Alpha and Galaxy Note 4 models with metal frames, the company presented the all-metal Samsung Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5. We bought the younger version for testing, Samsung A3 - manufacturers do not often indulge consumers with unusual smartphones with a seemingly small diagonal of 4.5 inches.

What did consumers get in the end with the metal case of the Samsung Galaxy A3? For starters, such "advantages" as a non-separable case with a non-removable battery and a high price. The case itself is made in such a way that an inexperienced user (if he has never seen a smartphone advertisement) may never know about the use of metal. The fact is that only the frame looks metal, and the cover is covered with a certain composition, because of which the material feels more like plastic than metal.

Then what were all these changes and the use of premium materials - remains a mystery. To raise the price of the Samsung Galaxy A3? Or is the Korean giant afraid to rush and implement drastic changes?

The appearance of the Samsung Galaxy A3 (SM-A300F) resembles the designer Galaxy Alpha, but the case is less “pretentious”, without bezel bends and white stripes near the corners of the case, with a monotonous back. The square-shaped speakers on the back of the device and the frames around the display look unusual - in our opinion, they could be narrower, given the price. Also note the already trending bulging camera lens. In general, the smartphone looks stylish and girls will especially like it, especially since in many stores it is sold together with a Pandora bracelet.

Smartphone with a diagonal of 4.5 inches fits perfectly in one hand and weighs only 110 grams. By the way, even the 4-inch one turned out to be 2 grams heavier. The thickness of the case reaches 7.2 mm (excluding the protruding camera lens), which is comparable to the iPhone 6's 7 mm. Height and width 130 and 65.5 mm respectively: according to the width of the Samsung Galaxy A3 at the same small Lenovo A2010, and in height - a little less than the Samsung Galaxy J1 (2016) (with a diagonal of 0.2 inches more). The build quality turned out to be at a good level, the phone case does not creak under pressure, and the material is scratch resistant.

Perhaps someone expected water protection from the phone, but it is not certified as water resistant.

Smartphone Samsung Galaxy A3 can be bought in white, silver, black and gold colors.

Screen - 3.1

The screen size of the device is 4.5 inches. The screen has a so-called qHD resolution of 960 × 540 pixels, which is rather typical for budget models or mini-flagships of 2013. Image clarity is not high - 245 pixels per inch, but the display is sharper, for example, the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime display with the same resolution, but a larger diagonal. The low resolution is perhaps the only thing you can reproach the display with - after all, it is Super AMOLED with its high brightness and the widest possible viewing angles.

The colors on the smartphone display are bright, even too rich and contrasting. As with most of the company's devices with this type of display, you can choose one of several screen modes in the settings. The maximum measured brightness is quite high for an AMOLED matrix - up to 370 cd / m 2, and the minimum white field brightness is only 5 cd / m 2, which will be very convenient for reading in the dark. In the sun, the display worked well, all the information remained readable. The display is protected by the latest generation Corning Gorilla Glass 4.

According to the results of the tests, the display left us with conflicting impressions. On the one hand, it cannot be said that it is bad, but on the other hand, such a low resolution looks like a mockery for such a rather big price of a smartphone.

Cameras - 3.5

The Galaxy A3 smartphone is equipped with two cameras: the main one with 8 MP and the front “pumped” camera for selfies with 5 MP. The latter is rather a tribute to fashion and a simple, inexpensive way to raise the characteristics of the device in the eyes of consumers, which is used by many manufacturers, especially in the mainstream segment. The main camera has a flash, autofocus, but for some reason there was no HDR mode, which can be found today in every second state employee (if not more often). Both cameras shoot Full HD video at 30 frames per second with stereo sound. At the same time, we found tracking autofocus only in the main camera, which is not surprising.

The maximum resolution of photos is 3264 × 2448 pixels, if there are not enough pixels, then you can shoot panoramas. The front camera of the phone has several features for selfie lovers – gesture or voice capture, 20-frame animated GIF capture, and a wide-angle selfie mode for panorama shots. You can merge three frames into one so that all your friends, or almost all, get into the pictures. It seems to us that the camera is good by the standards of a smartphone, the photos are quite clear, but sometimes there is not enough contrast in the pictures and there is some kind of white veil.

Working with text - 3.0

The pre-installed branded keyboard on the Samsung Galaxy A3 is good for working with text, but the small size of the diagonal does not contribute to comfortable typing. She has the ability to switch to a 3x4 keyboard, like on older phones (apparently for T9 lovers or those who are just switching to more modern smartphones). Continuous input using gestures (Swype) is supported, you will have to switch between languages by holding the spacebar and pulling it in any direction. The top row of keys has markings for quick dialing of numbers, there are no markings for additional characters. All in all, this is a typical good Samsung keyboard.

Internet - 5.0

Two browsers are preinstalled on the Samsung Galaxy A3 Duos smartphone - "Browser" and Google Chrome. This is a typical set, but with some unusual features. Google Chrome has a one-time auto-fit of text to a pre-selected size and synchronization of tabs with the desktop version of the browser, search on the page, compression mode, and a number of other typical features. The "Browser" has a "normal" text auto-fit, reading mode - very important features, according to many Samsung A3 users. The most interesting is the "Quick control" functions. If you turn them on and slide your finger from the edge of the display, control panel icons pop up near your finger in a semicircle - you just have to move your finger, choosing the desired actions. Filling Galaxy A3 was enough for vigorous browsing with a few open pages.

Communications - 3.8

According to this criterion, the Samsung Galaxy A3 Duos smartphone lacks only support for MHL, OTG or Slimport for a USB connector and dual-band Wi-Fi to the level of flagships. However, the device has something to brag about even without it: A-GPS, the ability to work with domestic GLONASS and Chinese Beidou, LTE (Cat 4, speed up to 150 Mbps) with support for Russian LTE frequencies. Separately, we can mention the presence of an NFC chip. Galaxy A3 can work with two Nano-SIM cards, but there is a little trick here - one of the slots can be used for either a memory card or a SIM card. It turns out that you have to choose: either two SIM-cards, or one, but also with a memory card. In our opinion, this is a very strange decision. In addition, due to the non-separable case, you will have to open the slots with a special key or any paper clip. On the case you can also find standard headphone jacks and a Micro-USB connector.

Multimedia - 3.4

The multimedia capabilities of the smartphone, according to the results of the tests, turned out to be average. In tests, the phone did not play 4K video (in principle, it does not need it), coped well with FLAC and WAV audio, but did not play AVI video and some MKV clips. We can say that Samsung has provided the device with support for rare audio formats, which cannot be said about video containers. But in the video player you can choose external subtitles.

Battery - 3.3

The Samsung Galaxy A3 SM-A300F Duos smartphone is equipped with a non-removable lithium-ion battery with a capacity of only 1900 mAh - almost like a thin "designer" Samsung Galaxy Alpha. This capacity is not at all impressive, but in practice it is quite enough for a day of work. And in tests, especially in the video marathon, the device performed very well, thanks to the AMOLED display and low resolution. So, the smartphone played HD video for almost 9 hours at maximum brightness, which is less than the Samsung Galaxy Alpha (10 hours), but it is longer than most tested smartphones. In the audio player mode, the phone pleasantly surprised, however, in comparison, the results are average for the tested devices - about 51 hours. That's almost a third longer than the Lumia 550. As for daily use, it was quite enough for us for a day of work with an average load. At the same time, the device charges relatively quickly - in 2.5 hours using standard charging.

Performance - 2.2

The Galaxy A3 uses the updated mid-range Qualcomm MSM8916 Snapdragon 410 64-bit chipset. Four processor cores operate at a frequency of up to 1.2 GHz, the Adreno 306 graphics processor is responsible for the graphics. Using a 64-bit processor is not just a tribute to fashion trends - the smartphone is worth " next in line" in the list of devices that will receive an update to Android 5.0, it is not known exactly when. The amount of RAM is 1 GB. In general, the performance of the phone can be assessed as average: the power of the device is enough for a fairly smooth operation of the interface, playback of Full HD video and most games.

Smartphone performance is somewhat of a mystery. The Samsung Galaxy Core Prime for 9,000 rubles has a similar chipset as the Samsung Galaxy A3 for 20,000 rubles, but, as tests have shown, the latter works noticeably faster, both in simple applications and games. For example, Minion Rush on a metal Samsung runs just perfectly smoothly, while on a Core Prime with the same performance characteristics it takes much longer to load and can sometimes slow down. In everyday use, the smartphone works quickly. The company is clearly successfully working on its interface, making it easier and removing unnecessary stuff. And while this isn't the first phone to feature a "lightweight" TouchWiz without a lot of "extra" apps and severe stuttering, Samsung still has a lot of work to do.

Want to play games? On the Galaxy A3, not only mediocre games (for example, Minion Rush) are launched, but also more “heavy”, though not all. So, in Dead Trigger 2 it is quite possible to play even at maximum settings, and Real Racing 3 did not want to start at all. As a gaming platform, it will not work, heavier games will slow down, but for most games, the filling of a smartphone is enough. In various benchmarks, the smartphone is quite capable of competing with mini-versions of the flagships of the 2014 model. In AnTuTu, the smartphone received an average of 21324 points, in the Ice Storm Unlimited test from 3DMark - 4558 points. We saw similar scores for the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime, and the HTC One mini 2.

Memory - 4.0

Unlike the Galaxy Alpha, the Galaxy A3 has a slot for a memory card, but the amount of internal memory is less - 16 GB, of which about 12 GB is available to the user. Hot-swappable cards are also supported by simply removing the cover. Memory cards up to 64 GB are supported.

Peculiarities

The smartphone runs on Android 4.4.4 (an update to Android Lollipop is promised over time) and runs Samsung's proprietary shell - TouchWiz with its own set of applications, settings, etc. It can be noted that the smartphone is not as packed with a large number of built-in proprietary applications, as one would expect from Samsung.

The main feature of the phone is the metal case. At the same time, it feels like plastic due to the special coating. Another feature that stems from the metal case is the non-separable case: you can’t remove the cover, and you can’t just change the battery just like that. The features include a thin body and low weight of the model, the presence of NFC, support for LTE, as well as a high price.

Competitors

As of February 2015, the Samsung Galaxy A3 can be purchased at a price of 19,990 rubles, we believe that this is very expensive for such characteristics, even though it is premium materials and an AMOLED display. By the way, HTC One mini 2 at the start cost the same 20,000, and is still sold at the same price. At the same time, the Galaxy A3 can be quite compared with the Galaxy S5 mini, which costs about the same.

HTC One mini 2 - the case is also made using metal, but it is not completely metal. Its display is also covered with protective glass (older model), but it has a higher resolution. The viewing angles of the Samsung Galaxy A3 display are wider and the image is richer. There are fewer megapixels in the main camera (8 versus 13 for HTC One mini 2), parity in the front ones. Both run on mid-range chipsets, but the Galaxy A3 has a more recent version and lasted a little longer in our battery tests. But HTC One mini 2 can offer not only support for LTE and NFC, but also dual-band Wi-Fi, as well as support for MHL and OTG. Both smartphones have nice, thoughtful interfaces and will get an update to Android 5.0 Lollipop. The price for both devices is the same - about 20 thousand rubles, and the choice of what to buy is not at all obvious.

Samsung Galaxy S5 mini - with the same display diagonal looks "simpler", but not like a female smartphone. In terms of dimensions, it is slightly thicker and heavier. It has an HD display and is water resistant instead of a metal case. At the same time, the device has a collapsible body with a removable battery, a front camera of “only” 2.1 MP and 1.5 GB of RAM, instead of 1 GB. As for the interfaces, in the single-sim version of the smartphone they are the same as in the Samsung Galaxy A3, plus an infrared port and dual-band Wi-Fi, and in the dual-sim version, you will have to do without LTE and NFC. At the same time, the average price for S5 mini in February 2015 managed to rise to 21,000 rubles.
